At I&V Junction - 5.4 miles south of New Iberia - the Southern Pacific's Midland Branch main line diverged west (on the right) while the Salt Mine Branch to Avery Island was on the straight side if the switch. As built, the I&V (Iberville & Vermillion) had trackage rights over the SP Salt Mine Branch from New Iberia to I&V Junction and then it built 15 miles of new tqack west to Abbeville. Once the I&V became a part of the SP, the line from New Iberia to Abbeville and beyond became the Midland Branch. New Iberia and Abbeville are the seats of Iberia and Vermillion parishes. |
