Amtrak SW8 747 was built at EMD’s Plant No. 3 in Cleveland, Ohio in February 1953 as New York Central 9623. It was subsequently Penn Central 8623 in 1968, and Conrail 8623 in 1976, and in May 1983 it was one of four SW8’s Conrail traded to Amtrak for a pair of E8A’s. It arrived in New Orleans in Npv 1984 where it received the new paint job shown here. It was last used on 3 February 1994, was sold that September and left NOUPT in December. New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal'r three SW8’s 1-3 were also made in Cleveland. |
