HOLLY. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during late November of 1965. Shown here is an unidentified locomotive shifting some cars at the Juniata River Railroad Bridge, just East of the Bedford Street Crossing. HOLLY Tower was located just this side of the Bridge. Beyond the Bridge at the right is the Passenger Station. Some of the Allegheny Mountains are also visible in the hazy distance. Once upon a time, this stretch of track was the original right of way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad: the journey began at the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal's Boat Basin (to the left) and proceeded West to Duncansville (to the right), Portage at the summit of the Alleghenies, then Johnstown and a return to canal and river travel all the way to Pittsburgh. |
