DB #115154-7 and 440524-7 in Munchen Hbf
Title:  DB #115154-7 and 440524-7 in Munchen Hbf
Description:  DBs Class 115 electric locomotives, of which 115154-7 on the left is one, are actually Class 110 and 113 units which have been redesignated for local and autotrain services. Classes 110 and 113 are in turn variants of the original DB E10 Class electrics introduced in 1956, being produced until 1969, with all units being redesignated Classes 110 and 112 in 1968, with an additional Class 114 being created through reclassification of the last 112 Class units in 1988. In addition, in 1991 the older Class 112s were reclassified 113, eliminating Class 112 as a Class designation. These locomotives, while they obviously vary in specifications, hence the different classifications, put out 5,000 horsepower (impressive for 1956), and can run between 120 and 160 Km/h, depending on how theyre equipped. Originally, they were only rated for 130 Km/h, but the higher-speed variants were introduced both from new production and requalification of older units. The prototypes had only been rated for 125, but this was raised so that they could be reclassified as express locomotives. The Class 440 EMU on the right is of an entirely different era, however. Marketed by Alstom as the Coradia Continental, and DB have operated these since 2008. However, they have a longer history in Britain, where they were used on First Great Western starting in the early 2000s, with later production units being classified as Class 180 Adelantes (The earlier Class 175 Units were just called Coradias or Coradia 1000s.). These are actually very fast trains by diesel standards, being capable of operating at 125 m.p.h. The 440s are EMUs, however, as Alsthom market the same carbody series as either. The diesel version is classified as Class 640 or 648 on DB.

DB 440812-6, Edited Version, Nurnberg Hbf
Title:  DB 440812-6, Edited Version, Nurnberg Hbf
Description:  Although DB are famous for their ICE high-speed trains and respectable Intercities and Eurocities, local services worked by EMUs are still more in abundance. Here a Class 440 EMU, #440812-6, arrives in Nurnberg Hbf. In recent years, local-specific paint schemes have been given up in favor of all-red schemes not dissimilar to those used on Intercities (although the coaching stock on elite locomotive hauled trains and ICEs remains white with a red stripe).

CD 751004-3 and 451004 in the Snow, Picture 2
Title:  CD 751004-3 and 451004 in the Snow, Picture 2
Description:  While I was waiting at the crossing for the train to come, I noticed #751004-3 deadheading 451004 on one of the main tracks, although it was stopped. There was also so MOW equipment on the consist further back. I couldnt tell if the 451 was headed for scrapping, repair, or simply another assignment, but I expect that many 451s will be scrapped soon with the arrival of new "City Elefant" EMUs. The 751 diesels are just as old, though, also dating back to the 1960s. #751004-3 still carries its CSD number on side, this being #T4781004. I dont know if this is for historic purposes (maybe its is slated for preservation), or if its simple laziness, but its interesting anyway.

Title:  CD 451019-9 at Nadrazi Senohraby

CD 451035-0, 452005-2, and 296 in the Snow
Title:  CD 451035-0, 452005-2, and 296 in the Snow
Description:  This shot more than most that Ive done lately illustrates the advantages of shooting film. I like the shot as it was shot, but this lineup of the two different "Pantograph" EMU classes, plus the crane, is better for the internet, so I cropped. The result? The photo is more or less as good as before, in spite of having used 35mm color print film, which other than the 110 stuff that my Fisher-Price used to take, is more or less the bottom-of-the-range when it comes to film technology.

CD 451060-9
Title:  CD 451060-9
Description:  This is #451060-9 after working a service from Prague, waiting at Cercany for the highball to Benesov U Prahy, where it will terminate and switch direction to work a return service to Prague. Notice the Class 810 railbus and the freight to the right. Cercany is a very busy station, in spite of Cercany being a relatively small town. There's plenty of business, too, as the only reason the platform isn't crawling with people is that the train is already loaded.

Title:  CD 451079-8 In Masarykovo Nadrazi (date is a guess)
Description:  In addition to the new Class 471s and 971s, Masarykovo still hosts services operated by the older 451 and 452 classes, although they are gradually dwindling in number. Hlavni Nadrazi is generally the better place to spot "pantographs" if that's really what you're after.

CD 452013-6
Title:  CD 452013-6
Description:  Class 451 and 452 EMUs, built by Stud/MEZ and Tatra from 1964-1968 and 1972-1973 respectively, make up a very large proportion of mainline commuter and local services in Bohemia, although it could be said they're long past their heyday. The reasons, in my opinion, are their advanced age, their noisiness, their jerky acceleration (which can cause standees to lose their balance), their inadequate maximum speed of 100Km/h (at least given the line upgrades coming in the near future), the spartanness of their accomodations (even local trains in Europe are generally nicer than on the "Pantographs," as these machines are commonly called), and the fact that they haven't been properly maintained or secured as of late, so vandalism and filth have really taken their toll. Nevertheless, I'm very happy to see that Bohemia still HAS local rail service, as without it, Cesky Drahy would be a far less practical option, and would lose both political support and ridership. This was taken in Mrac, where I had just gotten off a local service from Praha Hlavni Nadrazi (Prague) to Benesov U Prahy. I've had to do a lot of retouching on this photo to correct the colors and (some of) the scanner lines, but some of the "poor resolution" is really fog.

CD 452013-6
Title:  CD 452013-6
Description:  I took this on October 12th, right after getting off train #Os9608 (I think). It's pulling away in this picture, rather than into the station. You just can't tell because the markers aren't lit, although note that it's running on the right. This EMU, CD#452 013-6, also works the locals to Benesov, and I've ridden on it many, many times.

CD 452013-6 At Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD 452013-6 At Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  Class 451 and 452 EMUs are a necessary evil of travelling on Ceske Drahy. They're noisy, old, dirty, slow, rough-running, heavily vandalised, and laughably out of date, but they're often the only trains working the line you need to travel, and they rarely break down, actually. Here Ceske Drahy #452 013-6, a 452 Class EMU, waits to work a local service to Benesov U Prahy.

CD 471010-9 After Arrival at Kutna Hora Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD 471010-9 After Arrival at Kutna Hora Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  I shot most of my Kutna Hora pictures on Ektachrome, and from the look of how grainy these shots are, grainier than any slides Ive ever done, Im assuming it was Elite 400, although I seem to remember it being 200. I really doubt that 200 could look this bad, though, at least at full resolution. Oddly, the main reason Im not posting more of these is that most of them are going to end up in an NRHS slide show sooner or later. Theyre the main shots I have of this trip, so Im hoping that the story and the subject matter will be more important than resolution....

CD #471017-4 Preparing to Depart Kutna Hora Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  CD #471017-4 Preparing to Depart Kutna Hora Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  Heres the train that I took home. Worth noting in this photo is the ad on the side of the train, for a movie, Gympl, which glorifies grafitti vandals who trash trains. Its typical of the kinds of self-defeating ads that public transport services accept, and begs the question once again of why theyre tolerated.
