Title:  CB&Q 0-6-0 Class G-5-A 523
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-6-0 Class G-5-A 523 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in December 1920, photo by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was completed during December, 1920 (c/n 54195) and sold for scrap during May 1954. This is a USRA design, a total of 255 of this model were built by all builders, and the CB&Q received ten from Alco. After the USRA was dissolved in 1920, 15 copies were built by Baldwin and classed G-5-A. The main difference between the two classes was the omission of the steam superheater on the G-5-A's.

Title:  CB&Q 0-6-0 Class G-5-A 523
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-6-0 Class G-5-A 523 ft Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in December 1920, photo by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was completed in December 1920 (c/n 54195) and delivered to the CB&Q during 1921. It was one of 15 copies of the USRA 0-6-0 design ordered by the CB&Q, one of 25 on the railroad. The CB&Q had received 10 USRA 0-6-0's (class G-5) from Alco during 1919. The Alco's were pure USRA 0-6-0's, while the Baldwins were copies of the USRA design with some CB&Q modifications (no superheater, taller domes, CB&Q headlights, arch bar tender trucks, different tender design, to name a few).

CBQ 0-6-0 #562 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
Title:  CBQ 0-6-0 #562 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
Description:  Another fine example of a 1906 Baldwin built switcher, class G10. According to the Burlington Route Historical Society records, it was assigned to the St Joseph yard in 1935 and later in 1952 to the Galesburg yard. This photo appears to be between those two dates hence the arbitrary date used. In June of 1954, it met its end when it was sold for scrap. C.C. Grayson photo

SP 0-6-0T 565 - Southern Pacific LA General Shops
Title:  SP 0-6-0T 565 - Southern Pacific LA General Shops
Description:  The SP had a number of specialized steam switchers for moving locos around engine terminals and backshops. They were the 'shop switchers'; they were usually retired locomotives whose original usefulness had come to an end. This loco started out as a 1903 Baldwin 0-6-0 #1109 and was converted in 1939 to this streamlined 0-6-0T for use in the LA General Shops area. Interesting to see the orginal loco face sticking out of the streamlined sheeting. It served as a shop goat until being "vacated" in April of 1956 and finally scrapped in June of 1956.

Title:  CB&Q 0-6-0 Class G-10 565
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-6-0 Class G-10 565 I believe in Lincoln, Nebraska, sometime in 1956, negative by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 565 was built by Baldwin in 1904 as 2-6-2 Prairie CB&Q class R-4 number 1908 (c/n 24466), retired in July 1929 and rebuilt into a class G-10 0-6-0 and renumbered 565. A total of 35 R-4's (out of the original 40) were converted to 0-6-0's and given road numbers 560-594. Some of these lasted into the 1950's. This one retained the inboard piston valves of the R-4 when rebuilt, although 14 R-4's received new cylinders and Walschaerts valve gear during 1925.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-6-0 Class G-10 589 at Denver, Colorado on March 23, 1958, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This photo presents a date problem. The print is marked 03/23/58, and the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, indicates that it was sold for scrap in May 1954. Number 589 was built by Baldwin in 1904 as 2-6-2, class R-4 number 1921 (c/n 24497), rebuilt by the CB&Q in April 1930 to an 0-6-0, class G-10 number 589. From what I've observed, CB&Q Engineers operating 0-6-0's tended to sit on the window while switching.
