Title:
ROR 2-8-0 #712 - Rockton & Rion RR
Description:
Sad photo of an abandoned steam locomotive left to rust away. The once useful 2-8-0 Consolidation was built by Burnham, Wms & Co in November of 1903 as Atlantic Coast Line #712, serial #23210. Eventually this little loco ended up on the roster of the former Rockton & Rion RR serving one of the very last steam operating quarries in South Carolina. The Rockton & Rion Railroad was completed in 1897, a 12-mile short line. It served as the railroad for the Winnsboro Granite Company until the company closed in 1967. No photographer was listed for the photo. Does anyone know if this loco is still sitting abandoned at the quarry?
