Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2017, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:  CN 9671 and CN 9530
Description:  CN local shoves a string of cars into the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill yard via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 2 Mar. '17. The mill's Rail King is ready to extract a string of empty cars, including TPPX 75013, for the local to take back to Neenah. The Rail King is a Model RK330 G4 Mobile Railcar Mover, weight 51,500 lb., length 181", width 120", height (on road) 142", height (on rail) 134", rail clearance 3", road clearance 10", 4 speeds (forward & reverse), top speed on road 9 mph, top speed on rail 15 mph. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers).

Description:  A CN local shoves a string of cars across Garners Creek and into the east side of the Appleton Coated, LLC paper mill at Combined Locks, WI on 3 Mar. '17. Founded in 1889 as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it has been controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. There are currently 2 spurs on this side of the facility and 4 on the west side, there used to be more. The station sign is on the right, I do not know when the depot was removed.

Description:  CN 880897 woodchip gondola, ex-EURX (EuroCan Pulp and Paper Co., Ltd.), was part of the consist of a through freight passing the former N. Superior St. grade crossing and approaching Appleton St. as it headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 11 Mar. '17. EuroCan, originally a partnership of companies from Finland and Canada, opened a large paper mill at Kitimat, BC in 1970, they also had logging and sawmill ventures. The paper mill was owned by West Fraser Mills, Ltd., when it was exterminated in '10.

Description:  CN container train approaches the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing and parallels Harrison St. as heads northeast via former SOO rails at the south end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 12 Mar. '17. Train had five locomotives, CN 2299, CN 5445, CN 5711, CN 2573, CN 2602. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Description:  A northbound CN container train passes the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI (historically South Oshkosh, WI) on 19 Mar. '17. The yard was torn up in Aug. '16. There had been no cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. They did leave the passing siding and team track.

Description:  WSOR 502011, former ATSF, spotted on the spur that serves WOW Logistics at the corner of Oakwood Rd. and Badger Ave. at Oshkosh, WI on 19 Mar. '17. The facility does not appear to receive regular rail service, but when it does it is serviced by WSOR via former MILW rails.

Title:  IC 1037, CN 2019, et al.
Description:  CN through freight passes the former C&NW depot and parallels Broad St. as it heads south at Oshkosh, WI on"19 Mar. '17. Train had three locomotives, led by IC 1037 and CN 2019. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 on Broad St. between Washington Ave. and Merritt Ave. at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. Currently used by Clarity Care.
